Palliative care is specialized medical care for people living with a serious illness. With a focus on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of the illness, the goal of palliative care is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family. Palliative care is provided by a skilled team of physicians, nurses and other specialists who work closely with the patient’s primary and specialty care teams to provide added support throughout the illness. Palliative care is based on the needs of the patient, not on the patient’s prognosis. It is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness, and it can be provided along with curative treatment.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM PALLIATIVE CARE?

Our goal is to improve your quality of life by treating symptoms such as pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, constipation, nausea, loss of appetite and difficulty sleeping. Palliative care can help you function better with daily life and improve your ability to go through medical treatments. Community-based palliative care is provided where you reside rather that is your home, nursing home, assisted living, etc.
We also offer advanced care planning along with insight into community services and resources to meet all your needs. You can also expect close communication and a collaborative approach to your care.

WILL MY INSURANCE COVER PALLIATIVE CARE?

Most insurance plans cover all or part of palliative care, just as with other hospital and medical services. This is also true of Medicare and Medicaid. If costs concern you, a member from the palliative care team can meet with you to discuss payment options.

DO I HAVE TO GIVE UP MY OWN DOCTOR?

No. The palliative care team works in partnership with your primary care and specialty providers, delivering an extra layer of support to your care journey.
